Ingredients

Beef and Vegetables
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms, optional
Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
Cheese and Assembly
  • 4 slices provolone cheese, or preferred cheese
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • Olive oil, for cooking

Method

Cooking
  1. Warm a drizzle of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Cook the onion and green bell pepper for 3–5 minutes, until tender. If using mushrooms, add them and cook for 3 minutes.
  3. Move the vegetables to one side of the skillet. Add the ground beef, break it into pieces, and cook for 5–7 minutes, until no longer pink and the beef reaches 165°F / 74°C.
  4. Add the garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir everything together and cook for about 2 minutes.
  5. Lower the heat to low. Arrange the provolone slices over the beef and vegetables, cover the skillet, and cook for 2–3 minutes, until the cheese has melted.
Assembly
  1. Cut each hoagie roll lengthwise, taking care not to slice completely through.
  2. Fill the rolls with the melted-cheese beef and vegetable mixture.
  3. If desired, toast the filled sandwiches or the rolls themselves before serving.
