Ingredients

Meat Sauce
  • 1 lb (454 g) ground beef
  • 1/2 lb (227 g) sweet Italian sausage
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 48 oz (1.36 kg) prepared spaghetti sauce
Cheese Mixture
  • 15 oz (425 g) ricotta cheese (or cottage cheese)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 tsp dried parsley or 4 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
Lasagna Assembly
  • 12 uncooked lasagna noodles
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup water (if using thick sauce)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F / 190°C.
  2. Place the ground beef, sweet Italian sausage, and minced garlic in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until the meat is browned, then drain off the excess fat.
  3. Add the prepared spaghetti sauce to the skillet and stir with the cooked meat. Heat until warmed through, then set the meat sauce aside.
  4. In a bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, eggs, 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese, parsley, salt, and black pepper.
Assembly
  1. Coat the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish with a thin layer of meat sauce. Arrange 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  2. Spread 1/3 of the cheese mixture over the noodles, followed by 1/3 of the meat sauce.
  3. Build two more layers in the same order, using the remaining 8 noodles, cheese mixture, and meat sauce.
  4. Spread the remaining meat sauce over the top, then add 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese and 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese.
  5. If the sauce is thick, pour 1/4 cup water around the edges of the baking dish.
Baking
  1. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 25 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
Serving
  1. Allow the lasagna to stand for 15 minutes before serving.
