Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms, optional
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • Olive oil, for cooking

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the onion and green bell pepper, then sauté for 3–5 minutes until tender. If using mushrooms, add them and continue cooking for 3 minutes.
Cooking
  1. Move the vegetables to one side of the skillet. Add the ground beef to the open area and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart as it browns, until no longer pink.
  2. Add the garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Stir everything together and cook for about 2 minutes.
  3. Turn the heat to low. Divide the beef mixture into four portions and top each portion with one provolone slice. Cover the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes, until the cheese is melted.
Assembly
  1. Cut each hoagie roll lengthwise, taking care not to slice completely through.
  2. Fill the four rolls with the hot beef and vegetable mixture and melted cheese.
Serving
  1. Toast the filled rolls briefly if desired, then serve hot.

Notes

For make-ahead storage, refrigerate the cooked beef and vegetable mixture separately from the rolls, then reheat before assembling.
