Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks
  • 2 lbs (907 g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
Creamy Beef Gravy
  • 3 tbsp butter (salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Method

Preparation
  1. Place the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and black pepper in a large bowl. Mix gently until evenly combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 6–8 oval patties and set them aside.
Cooking
  1. Heat an oven-safe skillet and brown the beef patties for 3–4 minutes on each side. Transfer the patties to a plate.
  2. Add the butter to the same skillet and cook the sliced onion. Sprinkle in the flour and cook for 2 minutes.
  3. Slowly whisk the beef broth and heavy cream into the skillet until the gravy mixture is combined.
  4. Place the browned patties back into the skillet, settling them into the gravy.
Baking
  1. Cover the skillet tightly and bake at 350°F / 175°C for 45 minutes.
  2. Remove the cover and bake for another 15 minutes, until the beef patties reach an internal temperature of 160°F / 71°C.
Serving
  1. Take the skillet out of the oven and allow the hamburger steaks to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
