Ingredients

  • 1 pound (454 g) ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 to 5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup beef broth or water
  • Fresh parsley or chives, for garnish

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat the oven to 375°F / 190°C and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Warm the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it into smaller pieces, until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the onion and garlic to the skillet and cook until the onion becomes translucent.
Assembly
  1. Transfer the cooked beef, onion, and garlic to the prepared baking dish and spread them into an even layer.
  2. Place the sliced potatoes evenly over the beef. Season the potato layers with the salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika as you arrange them.
  3. Scatter the cheddar and Parmesan evenly over the potatoes.
  4. Pour the beef broth or water along the edges of the dish, keeping it off the cheese.
Baking
  1. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  2. Take off the foil and bake for another 15–20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and bubbling.
Serving
  1. Finish with fresh parsley or chives and serve hot.

Notes

Slice the potatoes thinly and arrange them evenly so they cook through during the covered baking stage.
